Maintaining Websites
For your Website to be a success you must maintain it. If you expect visitors to return, you must provide them with something new, correct errors and keep your site up to date. In addition, you must continue to monitor your search engine ranking, continue to promote your Website and find out who is linking to your site.
Outputs for this step are:
1) A maintenance plan for your site.
2) Updated pages for your Website based on your maintenance plan.
3) Determine your search engine ranking.
4) Find out who’s linking to your site.
5) Get an award for your site.
6) Take additional promotion actions.
How to maintain your website
Maintenance of a Website is actually only a repeat of the 6 previous steps: plan, design, HTML code, test and promote – done on a smaller scale.
Why maintain. Maintenance of a Website is performed for several reasons. These include:
- To enhance and/or improve the design.
- To update or add additional information.
- To respond to visitor’s comments/ recommendations.
- To correct errors and design problems.
- Static Websites soon die from lack of interest! The average life of a web page is 75 days.
General maintenance guidelines:
- Websites should never be static. Keeping a Website current isn’t a gimmick, it keeps your site popular. If your site is not updated regularly, visitors will not bother to return. If you don’t occasionally offer new information or resources, you’re not giving visitors any reason to return. No matter how well publicized your site is, if you don’t maintain it, it will decline in popularity.
- Keep it simple. Creating new and complicated web pages, will only mean more work for you.
- Be reliable, If you promise monthly updates, make sure you live up to your word. Do not offer anything that you can not deliver.
- Take any feedback you have received seriously and reply as soon as possible, and thank the visitor. If the feedback contains ideas on improving your site or correcting errors, evaluate each one. If you plan to add the suggestion, send an e-mail to the person who suggested it and indicate that they should return to your site on (specify a date) and see their idea in action.
- A "What’s New?" page can keep your return visitors up to date on what has changed since their last visit. You should also place a small "new" graphic next to items that have recently been updated, or added to your site.
- Develop a Website maintenance plan. Include in this plan the frequency for updating your site (update your site on a regular basis); a sentence outline of items that you will include during your next scheduled update due to: errors; design problems; enhancements; new information and your visitor’s comments/ recommendations. Keep this plan current and at update time, maintenance becomes a snap.
- Proof read your changed pages before you upload them.
- Test all changes. If you make a change to a page, no matter how small, always validate your HTML code and spell check it.
- Always develop your new pages on your local computer, and then upload them to your Website, add updated or new pages to your Website only after they have been tested, validated and work correctly.
- Always retain a backup copy of your Website on a diskette, as well as your hard drive.
How Often Should You Update Your Site? It depends on what you have to offer your visitors. A poll conducted last year at 1st Site Free revealed the following results:
Frequency

Daily
15%
Weekly
45%
Monthly
21%

Content Is King. One of the biggest problems any Website owner has is finding good content. Content is what brings your visitors to a site in the first place. If your pages aren’t updated and new content isn’t added, your Website will become ineffective.
Style sheets. If you are familiar with HTML and the basics of building Web pages, its time for you learn about the benefits of using style sheets (known as, Cascading Style Sheets). By using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) you can save a lot of work, control the style and layout of one page, multiple Web pages or your Website all at once.
Future Enhancements. After your Website is operational for a few months you might want to consider adding enhancements and new features, such as: a guestbook, counter, graphics, free banners, logos, buttons, a personal search engine and a web poll.
Add Some Scripts To Your Site. If you are new at creating a Website, did you know there are CGI scripts and JavaSripts available that you can add to your pages for free?
- Even if your Web host doesn’t allow or provide CGI scripts, you can use these CGI scripts to add message boards, guestbooks, form mail, counters, clocks and chat rooms to your site for free.
- You can use these JavaScripts on any site. But, your visitor’s browser must be Java enabled.
Continue to Monitor Your Position. Your search engine placement will change over time, so it is important that continue your placement. Often this is time-consuming and frustrating, but it has to be done!
- Make sure you are registered with the major search engines,
- Record this data in your promotion database.
- Revise your pages, metal data, and re-submit your pages as needed.
Re-register your site. Register your site again with the major search engines if you:
- Change your URL.
- Change the title of your listing.
- Change the content of a Web page.
- Change your description and/or keywords.
- Require an additional or different categories for your listing.
- Change your e-mail address, if it is associated with your listing
Continue to Promote. Submit your main page (index or home page) to as many Web directories/search engines as you can. Every time you browse the Web and come upon a new directory/ search engine, use it.
Poem: A Sad Snowy Night
She walks down the street
With no place to go
No coat on her back
And her shoes filled with snow
Her tattered clothes
Can’t keep her warm
She needs a place to stay
Until the morn
She asks a man
Along the way
If he knows of a shelter
Where she can stay
He looks at her
With a sigh
And shakes his head
As he walks by
She hangs her head
In sorrowful shame
For she knows
He’s not to blame
For her misfortune
For her despair
It wasn’t his fault
Why should he care
She goes into the alley
To get away from the breeze
Then covers herself with boxes
So she won’t freeze
It’s just another cold
Wintry night
That she’ll sleep outside
Till morning light
Poem: Broken Heart
Silence fell over the room
As I walked down the aisle
When I met you at the altar
They all just smiled
We said our vows
And promised to never part
Yet I stand here today
With this broken heart
My will to go on seems gone
My dreams torn and tattered
My love for you is still strong
But my heart beaten and shattered
You stand there as if
You’ve done nothing wrong
With her in your arms
How can I go on?
I was there for you
Through thick and through thin
I stood by your side
And wanted to till the end
But you deserted our vows
The promises that we had made
You lied and you cheated
Letting the flame just fade
There were several things
You’ve done to be untrue
But I forgave them all
For the love that I have for you
This is so hard for me to do
But today I will let you go
As hard as it is for me to say
Because I love you, you know
But always, remember this
I will never let you back in
You’ve made your decision
My heart will never be yours again
Poem: PLEASE LISTEN
I saw the way you looked at me
And it made me want to cry
Just because I don’t have what you have
Doesn’t make you better than I
I no longer have a house to call my own
I have been left out here all alone
Don’t turn away
Please listen to what I say
I was once like you
With a family and a home
But as time went by
I lost everything I owned
Just because you have everything now
And your life seems okay
It doesn’t mean it will always be that way
So don’t be so quick
to prejudge what you don’t understand
If you were in my position
I would give you work if not a hand
Please listen to what I have said
And consider how I feel
And then please give e some work
So I can buy myself a meal
Poem: FRIENDS
Now we’ve been friends
For quite a while
Whenever I had a problem
You made me smile
Whenever I was down
You helped me to stand
You gave only love
With no demands
You were there for me
Through thick and through thin
Through all of the trouble
I’ve gotten myself in
You’d pick me back up
Whenever I’d fall
And no matter how late
You’d always answer my call
And through all this time
You never asked me for a thing
Only love to my heart
Did you bring
But now I think
It’s time to repay
You for all the things
You’ve done along the way
For every smile
That you’ve brought out in me
I’ll try to make you happy
For eternity
For every time
That you helped me to stand
I’ll give you my all
With no demands
And for all the times
You gave me your heart
I’ll give you mine
And promise to never part
Poem: A Lover’s Prayer
Let me awake with you in my arms,
and I wake up the happiest of men.
Let your face be the first I see each day,
and the last I see when my day ends.
Let me be all that you want me to be,
to answer each question that you ask.
Let my hands and my will be at your call,
to perform each sweet and loving task.
Let me be always at your side, my love,
in this world of floods and droughts.
Let your voice be the one I hear most,
in this world of whispers and shouts.
And let me love you now and forever,
wherever the night and day leads us to,
so that far beyond mere stars or sun,
past time itself, I’ll still be loving you.

Poem: I WANT TO
I want to see you
In every moment of my life
I want to feel you
Like the warm far of a rabbit
I want to care for you
Like more than anything else
I want you in my heart
As long as I live
I want you in my mind
For ever more in my life.
I want you in my faith and trust!
I want you in my glory and joy!
But I don’t want you anywhere
If you break my heart!!

Poem: When I Need you
When I need you
I just close my eyes
And i’m with you
And all that I so wanna give you
Is only a heart beat away.
When I need love
I hold out my hands
And I touch love
I never knew there was so much love
Keeping me warm night and day.
Miles and miles of empty
Space in between us
A telephone can’t take
The place of your smile.
But you know I won’t
Be traveling forever
It’s cold out
But hold out
And do like I do.
When I need….
